Arthur Street Garage

Building a workshop and storage in our 'shared' garage with Dad

Arthur Street Garage

We have a problem - I have too many tools, bits, bobs and bikes! The Howard St solution had been to cram the spare room full of all my crap but, that kills the spare room, and we have a nice flat here and we want people to be able to stay over when they visit!

So its time to ‘re-organise’ the shared garage. It is not one garage per flat unfortunately, according to the deed, all 6 flats own one-sixth of all 6 garages… The solicitor recons this is an effore to make sure everyone chips in when they need some paint or a lightbulb. but it kills my plan for having a private garage.

The Plan

The layout of the garage below our flat is one huge space, with 3 garage doors across the front of them.

Decided to chance it and throw up a temporary wall, partitioning off one of the spaces directly below the flat. Ordered enough OSB and CLF to make a double skinned wall and got to work!

The Wall

This is the part dad came up tpo help with! A full double skinner, runners along the flaar with concrete anchors, on the roof with CT1 aka ‘Sticks like SH*T’ and then studs up the whole way. carefully measured that the far away skin would be at the centre line, so the wall is fully in ‘my’ bit.

Power

The double skinned wall let us fill it up with some cable and stick a few sockewts in. I ran power as a radial spur, from the plug in our spare room, under the bath, behind the loo and into the soil pipe channel, and finally, down into the garage! Rigged up a circuitboard to limit the full line to 16A, with a breaker for the lights and for the sockets.

Shelves

Knocked up a few massive wall shelves - probably even big enough to host a few people during the fringe! 234whatsapp-image-2026-04-12-at-15-10-33-mnw5bzgt-3.jpeg

Bench

The best finishing touch - my very own workbench! This is the life :)
